As a parent, have you decided what age you will enroll your child in kindergarten (TK, Taman Kanak-kanak) in Jakarta? This decision should be informed by knowledge of the ideal age for starting kindergarten, so your little one can receive the most complete education suited to what children their age need. Understanding the Ideal Age to Start Kindergarten In Indonesia, the age generally considered ideal for children to start TK is 4 to 5 years old. This is because the requirements for entering elementary school (Sekolah Dasar, or SD) also set a minimum age of 7 for public elementary schools (SD Negeri). Some private elementary schools, however, accept children who are 6 years old. So the ideal kindergarten age is often cited as 4 to 5 years old. TK itself is commonly divided into TK A and TK B, or small TK and large TK. Children aged 4 to 5 are placed in TK A, or small TK, while children aged 5 to 6 are placed in TK B, or large TK. However, enrolling your child in kindergarten in Jakarta is not only a matter of government rules on minimum age. The main basis is your child's readiness, which is actually the most crucial factor. Whatever their age, it is essential to make sure your child is ready. The parent's role is to help their little one prepare. Signs That a Child Is Ready for Kindergarten 1. Able to Follow Instructions If your child has reached the age of 4, it is worth paying attention to several indicators of whether your little one is ready for kindergarten. One of them is whether they can listen to and understand instructions. As children grow older, this ability should keep improving. Some children are even able to follow several instructions at once. 2. Social Interaction Another indicator of readiness for kindergarten is how your child interacts socially. At school, your little one will meet friends and teachers, so social skills are needed for children to take part in lessons. This can be seen in how comfortably a child shares many things, whether thoughts or ideas or physical objects such as toys. Here, you should be careful not to assume that a child is shy. They simply need more time to observe a new situation. In short, when they are willing to try joining a group, it means your little one is ready. 3. Working Independently A child is considered ready to start kindergarten in Jakarta or elsewhere when they can work independently. This means they can carry out certain activities on their own, without help from others. Simple examples include completing a task given by the teacher, coloring with crayons, holding a pencil, and so on. So the ideal age for kindergarten is not always strictly tied to a fixed number. Still, ages 4 to 5 are generally considered the ideal time to enroll your little one in TK. You can therefore help your child prepare to attend in-person school as they approach that age.
