Travel insurance and personal accident insurance may look similar at first glance. However, they are two different types of insurance. In general, both aim to give peace of mind while traveling or at work. Both also help protect the policyholder's financial situation against the risk of loss. The differences between travel insurance and personal accident insurance lie in coverage, duration of protection, premium cost, and scope of coverage. Travel insurance protects the insured during the trip, at the destination, and on the way back home. The coverage relates to medical needs and inconveniences that occur during travel. The medical risks covered include emergencies (sudden illness), accidents that result in disability or death, repatriation of remains, and funeral costs. Risks that cause inconvenience include flight delays and cancellations, lost luggage, loss of personal money, and risks arising from crime and terrorism. Travel insurance policies apply to both domestic and international trips. If you only purchase domestic coverage, the policy does not apply to international travel, and vice versa. However, if you purchase both, the policy covers both domestic and international trips. Personal accident insurance is different. It provides coverage whether or not the insured is traveling. Personal accident insurance can cover individuals or families. Its main benefit is a benefit payment (santunan) that helps the insured focus on recovery after an accident. In general, this insurance protects against all financial risks resulting from accidents that are unintentional or unplanned. Covered accidents may include traffic accidents, drowning, work accidents, or inhaling toxic gas. Personal accident insurance covers all post-accident treatment and medical care costs. It also pays a benefit amount if the insured suffers permanent disability or dies. Compared with travel insurance, personal accident insurance generally has a longer validity period. Policies are typically annual, and the insured remains covered for as long as the policy is active. Some insurance companies even offer protection for up to 50 years. Personal accident insurance generally applies only within the country. Reimbursement for treatment and care costs is also based on the rates set and applied domestically.
