Raising Bangkok chickens (ayam bangkok) is a smart business move. The breed is well known for being easy to care for and for its high market price. So what are the key tips for beginners who want to succeed with Bangkok chicken farming? Choosing Quality Breeding Stock The first step is to find good-quality Bangkok chicken breeding stock. Both males and females should be selected carefully by examining their physical traits. Bangkok chickens of superior quality typically have a head shaped like an areca nut with a thick brow ridge, thick, rough scales on the legs, and, in males, a sturdy, broad-chested body and a large, long neck. Quality breeding stock produces quality offspring, so it is important to select carefully. This is especially true for males, which are known for their large, sturdy bodies that look impressive. It is no surprise that their selling price remains high in the market. Some sell for hundreds of millions of rupiah for a single bird. When breeding, make sure both parent birds come from superior stock. Building Separate Coops for Males and Females The next key tip for raising Bangkok chickens is to build separate coops for males and females. Why separate them? Because the two have very different temperaments. Female Bangkok chickens adapt more easily to their surroundings. They only become aggressive and irritable when someone disturbs their chicks. Males, on the other hand, cannot share a coop, because fighting is a defining trait of the male Bangkok chicken. The reason male Bangkok chickens command high prices is their fighting strength. In a fight, a male will fight until it dies. Its claws and spurs (jalu) are deadly weapons against opponents. This behavior is triggered when a male meets another male that refuses to give up its territory. That is why males cannot be housed in the same place. Coops must also be kept clean and should not be left neglected. They need to be cleaned every morning and afternoon. There is good news, though: Bangkok chickens are known to be picky eaters, so they produce less waste, and it smells far less than broiler chickens (ayam potong). As a result, odor problems in Bangkok chicken farming tend to be easier to reduce, or even eliminate. Choosing the Right Feed and Nutritional Supplements The next step is choosing the right food for Bangkok chickens. Picking feed is not a major challenge, since this breed adapts very easily. However, to raise a strong breeding bird that commands a high selling price, the food you provide must be reliable. That is why the feed you choose must meet the chicken's basic nutritional needs. If you want the best results from raising Bangkok chickens, add vitamins and probiotics to help keep the birds healthy and strong. This is especially important for males used as fighting birds, so they earn high rankings and fetch a high price. Traditional herbal tonic (jamu) made from turmeric can also be given to boost appetite, help the birds gain weight, and help them grow taller and sturdier. Care goes beyond food, though, and hygiene matters too. Bathe the chickens regularly and place them in the morning sunlight. The goal is to strengthen their bones so they grow sturdier and sell for more in the chicken market.
